France Downs Philippines in First FIBA Qualifier Game

MANILA – San Antonio Spurs Guard, and France superstar Tony Parker guaranteed before the game a France win over host nation Philippines. “We will beat the Philippines, no problem”, he said. Yes, he was right, but it was a tough win.

It did not come easy for the French, winning by a score of 93-84, over the Philippines. They were down 10 at the end of the 1st Quarter, and for most of the 2nd quarter before storming back to take a 2 point lead at halftime.

France was led by EuroLeague MVP and Former Toronto Raptor Nando De Colo, who was on fire today, scoring 27 points on 64% shooting. Tony Parker backed up his comments by a solid performance as well, scoring 21 points with three 3 pointers, followed by 6 assists as well.

Gilas however, played a very good game. They were in control for three quarters of the first half, but just did not have the size to compete the whole game against an excellent french team. Former NBAer Andrey Blatche led the whole for Gilas, scoring 12 of their first 17 points, and finishing with 21 points, and 8 rebounds. Terrence Romeo was also great today, scoring 19 points, with three 3’s.

If the Philippines want to make it to the knockout stages, and possibly book a date to play Canada, they must bring that same intensity against New Zealand, as they did in the first half against France.

-Charlotte Hornets Guard Nic Batum did not play due to “contract reasons”
