MANILA – Cory Joseph was a man among boys today, in Canada’s first game of the FIBA Olympic Qualifiers in the Philippines. Joseph had a great day, the Toronto Ontario native had 21 points (8/17, 47.1% FG), 3 Rebounds, and 5 assists, which led Canada to a 77-69 victory against a solid Turkish team.
Today was also of the debut of Cleveland Cavaliers Forward, and NBA Champion Tristan Thompson. Thompson, had a decent outing scoring 10 points, but shooting a weak 27% from the field, as well as having 6 boards as well. With the victory, Canada moves atop of group A. If the Canadians stay at the top, they will play the 2nd place finisher of Group B.
As for the Turkish squad, their NBA talent was present in New Orleans Pelicans Center Omer Asik, and recently drafted to the Philadelphia 76’s in the first round, Furkan Korkmaz. Both did not had great nights, as Asik and Korkmaz combined for 14 minutes of playing time.
Canada play Wednesday 6:30am EST against Senegal.
