A B1g 10 championship in the books, and a birth to the Frozen Four within reach, Michigan should give most of the credit to their top line. JT Compher, Kyle Connor, and Tyler Motte, nicknamed the CCM line, have been the engine that keeps this Wolverine offense going.
When the committee announced the Top 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker, the CCM line became the first complete line to ever make it altogether as finalists in College Hockey history. Quite an accomplishment. All are 1, 2 and 3 in points overall, which says a lot considering the talent in the NCAA. Since being put together by legendary coach Red Berenson 25 games ago, the CCM line has been responsible for 67 of Michigan’s 131 goals, in other words that is half of their goals.
Since not being invited to USA’s World Junior camp, Freshman Kyle Connor has been on a mission to prove everyone wrong, starting with that 4 point night and hat trick against Minnesota back in December right after the roster was announced. The Jets first rounder has an insane 35 goals and 35 assists (70 points), in 37 games, 9 points ahead from his linemate JT Compher. I see Connor becoming the second freshman in a row to win the Hobey, after Jack Eichel won last year as a freshman.
JT Compher was recently part of the trade that sent Ryan O’Reilly to the Buffalo Sabres. Avs fans should be happen that they got this guy. Compher has been the leader of this strong Wolverine team, with him being the captain and all, while also being the facilitator of the CCM line, having 47 assists which leads the nation. The junior is good in the defensive end, and has very high Hockey IQ, which shows with his pile of assists.
I think the forgotten guy on this line, Junior Tyler Motte has been very consistent. I believe the most pure scorer on this line, netting 32 goals with 23 assists, the Chicago prospect has the guy creating space for Kyle Connor and JT Compher. The former fourth round pick plays with an edge, and his 32 goals show that.
It is very possible that these 3 players could be sitting together waiting to hear one of their teammates names called for the Hobey Baker. GO BLUE!
