Early Season Picks for the John Wooden

With 2015 winner Frank Kaminsky graduating, who will take it home in 2016?

With the college basketball season just beginning, I will go through my top 3 favorites to win the John Wooden Award.

The facts are there, you don’t always say the 5 star freshman winning this award. Look at the past award winners, from Frank the Tank, to Dougie McBuckets, and even Trey Burke back in 2013 wasn’t a freshman. Other than Ben Simmons, and maybe Skal Labissiere cracking my list.

Ben Simmons – LSU

This guy is just on a different level from everyone else. I haven’t seen a player dominate this bad, since Anthony Davis. So far, he has averaged 20 points, 15 rebounds, and 6 assists a game. You know this guy is good when he’s drawing comparisons to NBA greats such as Magic Johnson and LeBron James.

Denzel Valentine – Michigan State

When senior players Travis Trice and Brendan Dawson graduated, we all knew that Denzel Valentine was going to get the ball a lot more. After a solid Pan-Am Games, Denzel as picked up right where he left off, averaging 20 points, with 9 boards, and 8 assists, leading the Spartans to #1 in the rankings.

Tyler Ulis – Kentucky

He’s my sleeper. I could possibly see Tyler Ulis winning the award. After not electing to leave for the NBA draft, Ulis will be a leader after all the experience earned in last year’s near-perfect season. Like the Harrison Twins, I believe the 5’9 Point Guard will have the same impact as Andrew and Aaron had a year ago.
